My First Million Almost Didn't Happen

One of the worst feelings I can remember...

was back in 2012, after slaving for almost an entire year building what I was sure was the next big thing.

It was called 10 Minute Pages.

I was so sure it would work that I spent over $120,000 and 11 months of my life on it, working 18+ hour days to make everything perfect.

I'd signed a lease I couldn't really afford.

My wife was pregnant with baby #2.

And when launch day finally came, I nervously typed up an email to my list, hit send...

and nothing.

Almost no sales.

At first, I was determined

"It's just day one," I told myself.

By the next day, the optimism was gone...

and the fear set in.

I'd bet everything on this. I had very few leads, no customers, and I didn't know a single one of the big affiliates who had my buyers' attention.

What now?

Then I remembered one guy

There was one person I could call: a guy who knew the big affiliates in my market personally, and brokered deals between them and new products.

I couldn't reach the customers. I couldn't reach the big affiliates.

But I could reach him.

So I spent an entire weekend doing just one thing: figuring out how to make working with me a clear win for him.

Then I picked up the phone.

I told him exactly what I wanted: "Get me in front of the top affiliates in my market."

And he said yes!

The hour everything changed

In October 2012, he connected me with an affiliate who agreed to host a webinar for his audience...

with me presenting 10 Minute Pages.

As soon as the webinar ended, I went upstairs to find my wife and said...

"Honey, in the last hour, we just made $13,000."

And honestly?

It wasn't even the $13,000 that got me.

It was that, for the first time, it was clear we had a hit on our hands...

and that I'd finally built a system that would snowball.

And snowball it did!

Over the next 11 months, 10 Minute Pages went from almost nothing...

to over $1 million in sales.

What I learned (the hard way)

Looking back, here's what stings a little...

I spent 11 months and $120,000 perfecting the product.

But the product was never the problem.

The thing holding the whole business back was one thing: access to buyers.

That's the Theory of Constraints in a nutshell. Every system is only as strong as its weakest link, and improving anything other than that link barely moves the needle.

I'd been polishing everything except the constraint.

The moment I spent a single weekend working on the real bottleneck, everything changed.

So if you're stuck, here's the question I'd ask:

What's the one thing actually standing between you and your customers?

For me, it was access. And even that turned out to be closer than I thought. I didn't know the affiliates...

but I knew someone who knew them.

Diagram: Two steps removed. Your market is often closer than it looks

If access is your bottleneck too, here's what I'd do:

  • List the people who already reach your buyers: partners, publishers, affiliates, anyone your customers already trust.
  • Pick the one closest to your market.
  • Spend real time designing a deal that's genuinely good for them, not just for you.
  • Then make the call.

That one weekend of thinking was worth more than the entire 11 months of building.

It's a lesson I've built into every product since.
