The Art of Execution
Execution is something I've struggled with for over a decade.
And in my opinion, it's one of the single greatest constraints holding most founders back from their highest potential.
The symptoms?
Procrastination. Perfectionism. Overthinking. Tricking yourself into feeling "busy"...
anything to avoid doing the actual work!
Sound familiar?
For the longest time, you hear expert after expert say you've gotta hustle, you've gotta take action, you've gotta do whatever it takes...
but for whatever reason, you just can't muster the ability to do it.
So what gives?
What I'm about to share took me over 15 years to figure out. So if this is something you struggle with, it's worth a careful read.
Paradigm shift #1: execution is discipline
The first big shift for me was realizing that execution comes down to discipline.
I used to spend days, weeks, even months trying to get myself into the right emotional state to do the work.
I've probably read every book on productivity, habit-forming, and state changes...
But nothing is as powerful as discipline.
The reason is simple...
Emotions are volatile and unpredictable. You can get better at managing them, and the swings get smaller. But feeling steady and motivated every single day? That's simply not possible.
Focusing on your feelings, and hoping they'll drive your willpower, is a fool's errand.
Discipline is different. With discipline, your feelings don't get a vote.
Raining outside? Feel like crap? Coming down with something?
Doesn't matter.
You show up, and you get it done.
But discipline has its own problem
Getting things done on sheer willpower, day after day, is hard. Getting to that level takes time and effort.
So by that logic, you'd think execution has to be hard too.
Paradoxically... it doesn't!
Here's what I mean:
On the days you're emotionally there, you barely need discipline. You're motivated, you're excited, you show up and knock it out.
On the days you're not (bad night's sleep, an argument, any of a hundred anxiety triggers)...
that's when discipline carries you.
Together, they work hand in hand to produce a steady state of execution!

The most powerful tool of all: alignment
If you take away just one thing from this post, make it this...
The best, most reliable way to show up to the work excited and motivated, day after day, is maximum alignment.
Have you ever felt like you were sabotaging your own success?
You know, more or less, exactly what to do...
but when the rubber meets the road, you somehow find a way to screw it up?
That took me years to figure out too.
And here's the key insight: for founders, self-sabotage usually comes from a lack of alignment.
What you're working on doesn't line up with your deeper values and desires. Your subconscious is working against your conscious plan...
and that conflict is sabotaging your success.
Emotion and willpower will only take you so far when what's inside you is fighting what you're doing on the outside.
So if you want real growth this year, bring those two into alignment.
Are you working toward a dream (beyond the money) that's totally in line with your skills and your passions?
When I talk with founders who aren't sure what to do next, this is my first question.
I'm looking for the sweet spot where four things overlap:
- their skills
- their passions
- what the market wants
- and where the opportunity is

When you find that sweet spot...
discipline and execution become an afterthought.
